I want to continue to promote urban farming and food security in Duncan by permitting up to 6 hens on single family lots. People who want to keep chickens will likely have to apply for a chicken permit on line. At which point they will get access to free information about how chickens should be kept to protect their health and well-being.
I am very interested in the whole topic of Food Sustainability of Vancouver Island. Check out thisĀ web site: Vancouver Island Diet- to do with the 100 mile diet, eating locally and supporting local growers, food producers, and fishers.
In the neantime, dig up your front lawn and plant vegetables. Make a “Lasagne Garden.” Cowichan Green Community can tell you how.
At Jubilee Community Gardens, the City provides the water free of charge as part of our Food Security Action Plan. Originally the bed walls were made of the sod it took to uncover the dirt. Eventually, lumber yards were contacted, and the walls were made of plank seconds and waste wood. The dirt was donated by a company that made compost and potting soil.
Seeds and starter plants were initially donated by local nurseries and gardeners. These types of efforts get a lot of local public support, as a large section of the produce from the gardens is donated to the food bank and to the women’s shelter.
